Fields of rice on undulating terrain, Sideman is well known for those picturesque scenes. Perhaps less know are the small villages and hamlets surrounding the area. A visit here will provide a fascinating insight into local Balinese life mixing old and more recent cultures.

About 20 minutes from Ubud, on the road to Batur Volcano are these rice terraces and paddy fields. Picturesque enough but just a slight tourist hotspot with day trippers arriving up from Kuta.

Head in the clouds....

This was supposed to be a scenic view of Batur Volcano, but as you can see no such views as the cloud base is pretty low. With drizzle persistent, heading down into the caldera and out of the clouds seems a good idea. Later the rain returns, heavier and with thunder, so the only thing to do is take shelter in a nearby village!
