Stay or go......
A nice flight from Labuan Bajo and my first on a Russian built jet. £34 for the 1 hour flight an a Sukhoi Super Jet, brand new and compared to major western manufactured jets, much more spacious - enough space to move from the window seat into the isle without anyone having to get up!
So, back on Bali and undecided as to the next move - stay in Kuta and see what really makes the place tick for Aussies or escape to the relative calm of Ubud. Dirty beaches, boom boom base all night and morning plus faced with those hairy armpits hanging out of Bintang singlets doesn't have any appeal whatsoever. But is Bali really like that? I don't know, it's just hearsay and perhaps I should find out! On the other-hand it's not imperative that I know, so Ubud it is. A bus leaves at 4.30pm, plenty of time to walk upto to the Perama Office and get a ticket.
Jalan Legian number 39 is where I headed through this concrete jungle that is Kuta Bali. Any road at right angles to the airport is going to end up in the Legian area eventually and according to google maps shouldn't take more that about 30 minutes. A welcome sign here on the left stuck prominently on the side of a giant shopping mall - Starbucks, an ideal cooling off stop and of course a nice Americano, about £1.20 for a good size fill!
Passing landmarks like Waterbom, Holiday Inn and Discovery Mall the place certainly feels more Western than Indonesian. Looking around it's quite noticeable how many overweights there are, quite a lot and none of them are Indonesian. Well, all these facets of Western life can wait until I hit the West again in early July, yes that includes Macdonald's!
About 40 minutes from the Airport to 39 Jalan Legian and the bus office. 50,000 rp, About £2.50 but if I book the return trip I can get 20,000 rp discount. Yep, I think escaping to Ubud is a good decision. My second trip there and famous for being a destination of detoxifying qualities - won't be too many Western alcoholics there then, no boom boom base all night either.
