Beach Rescue...
No lifeguards, no rescue boat here on Independence Beach, Sihanoukville, Cambodia - its up to locals and other beach goers if a rescue is to take place as it did just a few moments ago among a very rough sea where the waves are rolling in upto three times the height of an average man.
Such waves have proved all too much for an unlucky simmer as he is quickly pulled out of his depth and is spotted face down in the water showing no signs of life. Local beach goers attempt to reach the victim without making significant headway against the very rough sea. Concern is growing and members of the crowd are becoming frantic as the man floats face- down with waves crashing over him.
A European female tourist residing at the 'Small Beach Bar' spots the man and quickly springs into action. Clearly a strong swimmer she reaches the man and pulls him towards the shore where locals take over and carry the lifeless body onto the beach. The tourist attempts to revive the man by applying resuscitation methods as practised and taught to school children and adults thought the European Union.
The resuscitation is working as the victim begins to expel water. No rescue helicopter, not even an ambulance is called as the victim is carried off to a waiting tuk tuk, to begin his journey to the local hospital,. still lifeless but at least a glimmer of hope as that tourist may have just saved a life.
