Snakes Bangkok 5th June 2012

Sssssnakes...

The Bangkok Red Cross Snake Farm exists in part due to the rearing of snakes that will eventually be milked for the production of anti-venom. I was here in March, arriving to late to see the snake show and half the place was closed with only the snake pits and King Cobra cage viewable. A different story this time though. I made sure to get there in plenty of time to see the snake handling show and all the exhibits. Its 4.50 UKP entrance fee with the show starting at 2.30pm. An interesting 30 minutes while the handlers showed off and teased the snakes. First on is the King Cobra, left alone on the floor hissing and spitting, lurching forward when teased. Next out is a Banded Kraite - black with yellow bands, and looks quite menacing. Then a variety of smaller snakes, another Cobra, Vipers and others. about half a dozen snakes around the pit area with another 30 or so in the main building - a modern, air-conditioned 2 storey unit. Upstairs, everything and anything snake related can be learnt here along with dead specimens to look at. A fascinating couple of hours here, well worth the fee. Not so fascinating though was the trickster hanging around looking for victims..and he found one. That's for the next blog, but in the mean time here are a few photos from the snake show. Getting there, to and from the Khao San area is bus number 47 and 6.50 baht.

A Rather Nervous Moi!
