Well, I have to say this weather is holding up nicely. Plenty of clouds, the high altitude variety that blocks the sun whilst the place stays bright and cheerful. No sign of any monsoon rains yet. Much less humidity than in Sihanoukville, about half i would estimate, it's all very pleasant, and getting around isn't arduous, not one bit!
Saturday - between Thammasatt and the Grand Palace is a flea market. It stretches for miles (it seems anyway) and is the place to get all those lucky charms and objects of superstition, among of course the more regular tack.An interesting couple of hours, given that I really didn't have a clue what else to do.
Sunday - A Buddhist convention has rolled into town, and made camp on the Royal Field. Tents and stages occupy pretty much 50 % of what was a giant open space to begin with, so the scale of this is really not inconsiderable. Lots of chanting, throwing of water by monks and its a spectacle of colour, music and dance. Its a fascinating insight and a marvellous opportunity to experience Thai Buddhist culture, albeit in a concentrated manner. But the best thing about this is the free feed. Yes, they encourage visitors to partake in a feeding frenzy, and it really is free, no catch. 3 different rice bowls, a hot blue juice, and stewed berries, not a bad little haul, and quite nice. Bowl number 2 though needs to come with a health warning - its some kind of chilli mix!
