Melbourne and the Grumpy old Sod..
Routing back towards Singapore, over Indonesia and landfall somewhere close to Perth before running into Melbourne - that's according to the flight map on the personal LCD media screen boasting something like 1200 channels of entertainment. One or two fairly decent movies on the first scan through, surprisingly no episodes of 'Mr. Bean' on this flight!
Counting down the hours then - 1 hour down, 3, 4 1/2, nearly halfway at Singapore as the sun sets. Some naps here and there, with both the beefers snoring! So, drastic action required - nothing like a good Bollywood to send me to sleep....Oh, better find those ear plugs.
The staff are keeping us all well hydrated, well fed too - a meal, then a pizza snack, then a pretty good breakfast. Cruising some 35000 feet near Adelaide with about 2 hours left, and dawn is just beginning to break.
The plane lands gently, but some harsh breaking before leaving the runway towards the gate. Everyone has to get off here, even those going onto Auckland, with all belongings and re-board in 1 hour from now at 8am. Time for a very quick wander round and perhaps a photo as the twilight hours fade and daylight beckons. No sooner off the gang plank than into the herding penn for another baggage x-ray. I make my excuse, something about needing the toilet and proceed towards the main terminal peering through the darkened windows out onto the tarmac. Nothing to see actually, a plane from Qantas, worth a snap. Oh dear, what's this as a six footer comes bounding up, muttering and shaking a fist, something about no photos allowed. I am made to delete it as he watched me fumble with the camera dials.
Better get back to the penn and wait with everyone else. Another security check, passports and boarding pass again, and again, and again.... 10am as the Airbus gets underway for the 3 hour flight to Auckland, oh, and another breakfast.
