Going Flying - Melaka March 3rd 2013

Gone Flying....

This is going to be quite a mission, and I will be surprised if I can pull it off, but worth a try. Get a bus to the local  Airport, find a flying club and chat up a pilot into flying to Simpang, an airfield in the middle of Kuala Lumpur that is home to the RMAF museum and a flying club.

Another hike upto the Sentral bus station, really it's quicker to do that than wait in town for bus 17. Another consultation about which bus for where! Bus number 1, platform 1 i am told. actually it turns out to be bus 1B after showing the driver a map and pointing out that I need to stop at the Flying School.

2 Ringitt for this trip which actually isn't that far, but just too far to hike. Eventually the airport is in sight, sailing past the terminal to the end of the runway before making a left and on towards the Malaysian Flying Academy. Another unofficial bus stop, and a 10 minute hike to the guard house. Bad news, the place is closed - 'it's an Islamic holiday', explains the rather plumb Chinese gate man. So, no Chinese pilots then, how disappointing - a complete mission failure and at the first hurdle!

Well, now I'm here better poke around and see what turns up. It's all quiet, nothing much going on as the heat builds. Next door is CTRM, a composite components manufacturing and assembly plant - basically they build plastic aeroplanes. Nothing to see their since hangars obscure the aircraft  parking compound. Next, a lane leading towards the runway, shaded and a nice breeze funnels down between factory walls. A small hangar here, containing about 6 ultralight aircraft, those little ones powered by very small engines. again, very quiet, gate closed but left unlocked. Didn't look inviting so a few snaps through the fence and back down the lane again. Back towards the academy where I could at least get some photos of the planes, and then the bus back and time for another stomp around Tesco - need some bug spray, maybe a couple of new shirts since the prices I saw there the other day were ok, not complete bargains though.
