The Pasifika Festival, Auckland, March 9th 2013

Pasifika at Western Springs

Still knackered even after 9 hours of sleeping like a baby, uninterrupted! A new day, the first day in New Zealand and a crowded breakfast table as the Fat Cats scramble to get to the toast, cereal and other edible paraphernalia. The emphasis here seems to be on healthy eating, or at least eating non-commercially produced foods where possible - that's OK, I can live with that!

Hanging around outside in the sunshine, hot for these people but pretty nice for me at 25 degrees C. Taryn the boss lady informs us of a festival taking place a few miles away. The Pasifika is a weekend of indigenous fun and frolics somewhere in the Auckland suburbs, organised by folk from the South Pacific communities and of course the Maoris.

A beaten up old campervan can be hired out for $10 NZD, and so a plan begins to form. A driver is nominated, a French WOOFer, and now heading towards the Auckland Suburbs and Western Springs, following a SATNAV on someones Samsung smart phone. Lost on the motorway since the SATNAV is slow to update and provide accurate information, but eventually a u-turn at the next exit and a consensus as to the correct exit is reached.

This looks like a big gig, people and cars everywhere looking for a parking spot, looking for a lucky break actually. A lucky break we get, a parking spot close to the grounds is grabbed quickly and the Fat Cats pile out.

Free to get in here and looks like plenty to see. Music, dancing, plenty of t-shirts for sale and loads of food on offer for those that brought plenty of cash with them - typically 4-5 quid for something to eat, not big portions either. 3 hours wandering around the park, peering into the lake and watching the eels, taking in the life and culture of those folk from the South Pacific and of course the Maoris.
