Asia Calls but not before Rotorua, April 16th 2013

Rotorua, City of Sulphur

Rain on the horizon, and plenty of it over the next couple of days according to the weather forecast last night. Spits and spots already as the bus rolls out of Waikanae for the 6 hour journey north to  Sulphur City - Rotorua. It's the last leg of this 5 week exploration of New Zealand and thus begins the journey back towards Asia and the Country of Singapore. 3 nights in Rotorua then, before the bus to Auckland Airport on Friday.

Not quite a scenic ride as the rain sets in on the desert plateau. Overcast for much of the ride to Rotorua looks like, time to put the camera away and get out the iPod! So, to the dulcet tones of Amos and Andy, the drama and suspense of Dragnet and the Suspense mystery stories, the 6 hour journey to Sulphur city isn't an arduous one.

Rotorua, must be getting close as columns of steam can be seen rising from the bush. This will be part of the areas geothermal activity, part of the whole earthquake, volcano and lava scene of New Zealand. Heavy rain now as the bus pulls into the i-site bus stand. Blarney Rock is the backpackers accommodation for tonight, just a few block from here according to the tourist desk.

Time to venture out since the rain is easing a little. The city park is close by and has been constructed around a hotbed of geothermal activity according to a note at the hostel, so that sounds like a pretty good first trek. Just 10 minutes straight down and there it is -  columns of rising steam and the faint aroma of sulphur. Ominous warning signs about staying on the designated trails due to some seriously hot activity - of the natural kind, I mean of the mineral kind. Bubbling mud, steamy pools and hot rocks all can be experienced in this city park, even a pool harnessed to so visitors could take a dip. I would say for a city park this one rocks, but not quite the top spot though,,that belongs to Bangkok.

Need to do a supermarket run. The 'Pak n Save' is just a 10 minute hike from Blarney, quite handy for, those essential groceries, at the cheapest prices the Kiwis can possibly offer. 2 litres of milk, 6 buns at reduced price, tub of humus 2 bananas and a French stick - £7.
