South Island, New Zealand, March 29th 2013

Wellington to Picton...

Today, Good Friday and  heading to the South Island via the Inter Island Ferry from Wellington. 30 UK Pounds via the web, 5 quid to get to Wellington and 2 quid for a shuttle bus to the ferry terminal.
Good Friday and 90% of New Zealand is closed, except the Wellington public transport service thankfully. The remaining establishments open are those related to tourism - "its in the laws of the land", explains uncle as he drives me to Waikanae Station. I had plans to stock up with food from the supermarket opposite but since this area isn't particularly touristy that plan has been scuppered and I shall be well and truly tourist trapped! Thankfully, auntie had the answer - cheese and tomato sandwich plus a banana should keep me going.

Check-in and bag drop at the ferry terminal as the shuttle bus pulls in right to the front door. 10 minutes to grab a coffee and something else to eat since the prices here look to be quite reasonable considering I'm a trapped tourist. It's  a while since I've been on one of these, about 20 years ago across the English Chanel.
Scenery from another perspective as the ferry leaves Wellington behind and heads into the Cook Straight. Stunning seascapes, panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and a few aeroplanes since the airport is close by. The trip should take 3 hours, not sure I have enough camera batteries1 plenty of tourists on the open deck taking the opportunity to photograph the views despite a cold, strong wind.

Approaching the South Island with scenery just as stunning, perhaps more so in places as mountains tower higher closer to the waters edge. More greenery with pine forested hills blending with the turquoise water. Lodges and huts on the shoreline, only accessible by boat it seems. Picton in view and what a view it is too - a town nestled at the base of rich green hills and a harbour in turquoise makes an exceedingly picturesque scene.

Picton, as everyone piles off the ferry. Oh look, there's a little aeroplane tied to a pier, on floats of course. The sign outside advertises scenic rides around this area known as Marlborough Sounds. Just about 10 minutes hiking towards the town and there is Fat Cod Backpackers, hopefully they have me booked in for 3 nights.
