The Wahine Disaster, Wellington Harbour.
Today marks 45 years since the Interisland ferry 'Wahine' sank close to Wellington Harbour with the loss of around 51 lives. Freak weather was to blame as two active weather systems collided over Wellington producing winds of 120+ MPH. A gathering today of survivors, family members of those that died and others involved with the rescue. A poignant day then for residents of Wellington as they remember the events of 45 years ago today in a gathering at the city's Sea and City Museum. Free to get in and quite a comprehensive display of Wellingtons maritime developments and the city's social evolution beginning from around the Victorian era.
