Big Buddha, Kandy February 1st 2013

The Big big Buddha...

It's a steep hike up a small local road, somewhere north of the town centre. The big Buddha sits high and can be seen from anywhere in and around Kandy, especially on a sunny day when the brilliant white of the statue is reflected. Hiking ever closer and its really quite an impressive piece of work in its own right. Best photos are from the outside of the walled compound, where inside will be just too close for any decent image. Tourists have to pay to get inside the place, about £2.50, I decline the invitation and instead admire the panoramic views, this time of Kandy town centre. Another perspective on Kandy from several hundred feet up looking to the right of the lake. Those busy streets - noise, bustle and fumes a long way off, for the time being anyway.

A slow stroll down towards the town, with the intent of visiting the bus stand. I need to find out where the bus leaves for Negombo from since making assumptions around here is often a precarious business when arranging travel plans. Navigating through some leafy lanes, dark passages and along an old railway track. Well, at least one assumption - that old railway line should lead towards the station, and it does.

Another very busy bus station, seems to be the place for medium to long distance transport. Local buses are located closer towards the market which is where I got the bus to that seaplane lake. Having scoured the place and asked a few questions, there are 2 bus companies running down to Negombo - the grubby red bus operator, and the slightly better blue and white bus.  Red bus is operated on a more frequent basis, but the blue and white bus less so. 1030 and 1230 are decent times for that bus and so the plan is formed, ready to activate in a day or two.
