Jungle Trek Number 4, Tenah Rata, Cameron Highlands February 22 2013

Another Jungle Rumble...

After yesterday's effort, a day of relaxation and recovery so a short hike, maybe through the park and, well, I don't know yet. A late breakfast today, paratha  with dhal sauce from Kumar's - a pretty decent place on the main road with average prices for a tourist town, about £1.05.

Actually quite a nice park, no sign of any vandalism, surprising since there isn't really anything for kids to do in this town. By comparison of course Western kids would have the place vandalised in a short space of time, I think we all know that - an observation in cultural differences. Well manicured, well landscaped and planned with an alpine theme it looks like. A rough path opposite leading off into the  nearby jungle and suddenly a spurt of boundless energy! Paved in parts and running beside a river, at least minimal effort required, so far anyway. Actually, it's turning out to be quite a nice hike. Plenty of spiders, those big yellow stripy ones that look quite deadly and  green striped with spots of yellow, looking equally menacing.

The terrain isn't challenging on this hike, and even a few birds to see. My sense of direction tells me we are on the way to Brinchang, the next town along the main road, which isn't far away. A community on the left, looks like some kind of market garden farm with those poly greenhouses everywhere. Yes, strawberries and market garden vegetables for sale. Back on the hike then since there really isn't anything here to see, very quiet place.

About an hour now, the trail looks like its coming to the end, into something like a picnic spot, deserted being a weekday of course. Another place to get strawberries here too, just on the left. A quick look in here in the hope of getting a cup of tea. Tea, but without milk. I can have strawberry flavoured coffee with milk though! No thanks as a cocktail of chemicals comes to mind. More strawberry products - various candies, drinks even real strawberries are available!

A few steps further, there is a little church high on the bank. Behind that church is one of those military style accommodation buildings - perhaps a remnant from the British Colonial years.  A little poke around behind the building and there on a branch, 3 colourful birds, about the size of magpies but with shades of reds and yellows mixed into the gray body. A good photo since they seem to be enjoying posing.

The trail has ended but I'll carry on a while towards Brinchang, see what else turns up for the camera. Actually, nothing much. A golf course here, might be good for a snake as I navigate the edge. Nope, no snake so better start the trek back to Tenah Rata. According to a sign post this is Jungle Walk number 4. An easy little hike, quite nice beside the gurgling stream, but really don't bother with the strawberry places, not unless of course you need a fix of chemicals.
