Not An Average Saturday Night in Georgetown, Penang February 16th 2013

An Interim Blog...

The festive mood continues unabated tonight across the Georgetown Heritage Area. Local and national artists joining together to bring the residents and visitors a spectacle of colour, music and culture. It takes 2 hours to explore the streets of Georgetown, thronging with excited crowds looking for entertainment. Entertainment they got as artists performed renditions of ancient Chinese dances, jazzy numbers from the 30's era and then, perhaps a rather predictable routine - Oppa Gangnam Style. Performed by the local youth club, they certainly had the crowds attention for the next 10 minutes as they continued with a further two modern day pop numbers with spirited routines. Dragon and lion dances in abundance and food, an entire street devoted to food stands, drink stands and, well, more food. The towns religious architecture is on show too, resplendent in floodlights and draped in those red lanterns, with some establishments having their own staged performances. It all go's on untill midnight - then bang! yes, another large firework display ending the evenings festivities. A mix of ancient and modern Chinese culture displayed for the world to see and visitors to experience - Chinese New Year, well worth hanging around for.

    Good morning Paul,
Very nice photos. It was something else running into you last night. We are glad you decided to stay in Penang for the CNY celebrations. Virginia took 359 photos last night. She'll edit them when she's up and about in another hour - more or less. Tonight, from 9pm to 12midnight: Thi Kong (Heavenly God) Birthday celebration = Chew Jetty & Hill Railway Road, Ayer Itam. Hopefully, we'll see you there. I'll send you and e-mail later this morning. Michael
